Things to Do Near St Dogmaels in October 2026

Autumn days out, coastal walks, local food and things to see

October is a wonderful month to explore St Dogmaels and the surrounding Cardigan Bay area. The summer crowds have disappeared; the countryside takes on beautiful autumn colours and there is still plenty to see and do — whatever the weather.

Whether you’re staying for a relaxing break, a walking holiday or a family getaway, here are some of our favourite things to do near St Dogmaels this October.

1. Explore St Dogmaels Abbey

Right on your doorstep, St Dogmaels Abbey is one of the area’s most atmospheric historic sites.

The remains of the medieval abbey sit beside the River Teifi, and October’s softer light and autumn colours make it an especially attractive time to visit.

The adjoining The Coach House provides an opportunity to learn more about the history of the abbey and the local area.

It’s an ideal place for a gentle morning visit before exploring the village and riverside.

2. Walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path

October is a fantastic month for walking.

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path begins at St Dogmaels and provides spectacular views across the coastline. You don’t have to tackle a long-distance walk — simply choose a section that suits you and enjoy the scenery.

Head towards Poppit Sands for dramatic coastal views, or walk along the estuary and enjoy the changing colours of the countryside.

3. Enjoy Poppit Sands

Just a few minutes from St Dogmaels, Poppit Sands is beautiful at any time of year.

In October you’ll often find the beach wonderfully peaceful. It’s perfect for a brisk walk, letting the dog run, collecting shells or simply enjoying the sea air.

Afterwards, pop into Crwst Poppit for something warming to eat or drink.

4. Discover Cardigan Bay’s wildlife

October is also a good time to learn more about the remarkable wildlife of Cardigan Bay.

The Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre at Gwbert remains open during the 2026 season until 1 November, with its visitor centre open through the end of October. Visitors can learn about bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises and Atlantic grey seals.

Even when you’re simply walking along the coast, keep your eyes open — autumn can provide some excellent opportunities for spotting seabirds and marine wildlife.

5. Visit the Welsh Wildlife Centre

A short drive from Cardigan, the Welsh Wildlife Centre is an excellent choice for an autumn day out.

There are nature trails, wildlife habitats and walks around the Teifi Marshes. The autumn colours can be spectacular, making October a particularly enjoyable time to explore.

It’s also a useful option when you want something outdoors but don’t fancy a strenuous coastal walk.

6. Spend a day exploring Cardigan

Cardigan is only a few minutes from St Dogmaels and makes an excellent October day out.

Explore the independent shops, cafés, galleries and historic streets before stopping for lunch or coffee.

For a café stop, Crwst is right in the town centre, while Castle Cafe is another option.

For dinner, The Copper Pot and Mannucci’s Italian Restaurant are among the local choices.

7. Look out for October arts and crafts

Cardigan has a thriving arts scene, and there are events throughout the autumn.

One confirmed event for October 2026 is a Cardigan Arts workshop, “Exploring Abstract Landscapes”, taking place at St Dogmaels Memorial Hall on 21 October, 2–5pm.

It’s worth checking local event listings before your visit, as additional exhibitions, workshops and performances may be announced.

8. Don’t miss Aberteifi LIVE – 30 & 31 October

If you’re visiting at the end of October, there’s a particularly exciting event to look out for.

Aberteifi LIVE takes place in Cardigan on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 2026.

The new two-day grassroots music festival will spread performances across several Cardigan venues, including Mwldan, Small World Theatre, Bethania, GRAIN and The Cellar. More than 40 live performances are planned, covering genres including folk, indie, soul, grime and electronic music.

It’s a fantastic reason to combine a weekend in St Dogmaels with an evening in Cardigan.

9. Explore the River Teifi

The River Teifi is at the heart of St Dogmaels.

Take a leisurely stroll along the river, watch the boats and enjoy the changing autumn landscape.

For something a little different, keep an eye on seasonal boat trips from A Bay To Remember. Availability can be weather-dependent at this time of year, so check directly before travelling.

10. Visit Y Felin

For something a little different, visit Y Felin, the historic working watermill in St Dogmaels.

It offers a fascinating glimpse into the area’s industrial and agricultural heritage and makes a great addition to a day exploring the village.

11. Have an autumn beach walk

Don’t rule out the beaches simply because summer is over.

October can actually be one of the best times to enjoy the Pembrokeshire coastline. Poppit Sands, Mwnt, Aberporth and Tresaith are all worth considering for a windswept autumn walk.

Wrap up warm, bring the dog if appropriate and finish the day with a hot drink or meal.

12. Enjoy Halloween half-term

If you’re visiting towards the end of October, there are usually plenty of Halloween and half-term activities across west Wales.

Further afield in Pembrokeshire, Picton Castle & Gardens has Halloween activities scheduled for 26–31 October 2026, including spooky decorations and children’s arts and crafts.

For families staying around St Dogmaels, it’s worth checking what’s being organised locally as half-term approaches.

13. Enjoy a cosy autumn meal

One of the pleasures of an October break is being able to finish a day outdoors with good food.

In St Dogmaels, consider The Ferry Inn or White Hart Community Inn for a relaxed pub atmosphere.

For something quick and local, Môr Ffein Llandudoch is another option.

And, of course, Cardigan has plenty of cafés and restaurants to choose from.
